How we chose
We started with the courses that appear in the search results and AI answers for "best SEO course" in September 2026, then checked whether each one could still be bought. Four could not: The Affiliate Lab, ClickMinded's SEO course, Authority Hacker's Authority Site System and Gotch SEO Academy have all closed, been withdrawn or lost their public pages since late 2024. They are listed below so you do not go looking for them. That left nine live products. For each one we read the official sales page, the checkout page and the terms of service, recorded the price, format, refund terms, live-support model and any stated AI-search coverage, and scored it on the eight criteria published on the methodology page. The publisher of this site is a paying member of AI SEO Rainmakers. That is disclosed on every page and explained under who runs this site, and it is why the rubric is public: you can re-score anything on this site yourself.
What changed in SEO courses in 2026
Three things moved this year, and they change what "best" means.
First, the free tier pivoted to AI search. HubSpot retired its long-running SEO Certification; the old course URL now redirects to a new AEO Fundamentals certification. Ahrefs added a separate Answer Engine Optimization course beside its beginner course. Semrush Academy added an "AI Search Operating System" course and rebuilt its on-page course as "On-Page SEO and AI Search Essentials". If a listicle you are reading still recommends "the HubSpot SEO certification", it was written before June 2026.
Second, the paid market split into two shapes. Recorded courses with a one-time fee, of which Tech SEO Pro is the only one left in our table, and paid communities billed monthly with live calls (AI SEO Rainmakers, Traffic Think Tank, The Blueprint Training, AI Ranking). The monthly products are not cheaper. Over a year they usually cost more. What you are paying for is the update cadence and access to the person who runs it.
Third, testing became the differentiator. Any course can describe how AI Overviews work. Very few show you a dated experiment with a result. That is the criterion that separated the top of our table from the middle, and it is the one we weight most heavily when two products are close.
Courses that no longer exist
The paid SEO course market thinned out between December 2024 and mid-2026. If a listicle recommends any of these, it is out of date.
| Course | Status | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Affiliate LabThe Affiliate Lab (LeadSpring) | Closed (was $997) | Closed in 2025. The archived sales page (captured 30 May 2025) carries an official closure banner; affiliatelab.im now redirects to diggitymarketing.com. Last official price was $997 one-time with no refunds. | source |
| ClickMinded SEO CourseClickMinded LLC | Not listed | No public sales page as of 9 September 2026. The SEO training URL redirects to a free guide; the course library was folded into the mOS subscription in 2024 to 2025 and is no longer named on the current mOS page. Terms still offer a 14-day refund on course purchases. | source |
| The Authority Site System (Authority Hacker)Judgement Media Ltd (Authority Hacker) | Closed | Every legacy course URL now redirects to the AI Accelerator, an AI-automation membership at $99 to $149 per month that is not an SEO course. Third-party sources date the closure to 16 December 2024; Authority Hacker publishes no closure page. | source |
| Gotch SEO AcademyGotch SEO, LLC (Rankability) | Not listed | Every public Academy URL redirects to the Rankability homepage and the member site is login-only. No current price, format or curriculum could be verified. The academy terms state a 72-hour refund window. | source |
Free versus paid
The free courses from Ahrefs, Semrush and HubSpot are competent. They exist to sell software, which is why they are free, and that shapes them: they teach the parts of SEO the tools measure. Keyword research, on-page structure, technical audits, link metrics. They do not teach you what to do when a tactic stops working, because nothing in them is dated. For a beginner that is fine. For someone with a site that lost traffic this year, it is not enough.
Paid products earn their price in one of three ways: a named practitioner you can question, a testing programme with published results, or tooling you would otherwise build yourself. A paid course that offers none of those is a free course with an invoice.
Community versus course
A recorded course has a finish line. A community does not, and that is the honest trade. Communities cost more over time, demand attention (Rainmakers alone adds 3.5 hours of live call a week to a daily feed), and are only as good as the person hosting the calls. In return, the material is current and you can ask about your own site. If you want to "complete SEO" and move on, buy a course. If you run sites or clients and need the answer to change when Google changes, join a community and budget for it as an ongoing cost.
Pick by situation
- You want AI search visibility for sites you already rank: read our AI SEO course comparison.
- You already rank things and want the advanced layer: the advanced options for operators.
- You run or are starting an agency: the agency owner's pick.
- You build affiliate or lead-gen sites: what replaces the closed affiliate courses.
- You have never done SEO: the free Ahrefs beginner course first, then Semrush Academy. Both are in the price and refund table with links.
What to ignore when choosing
Certificates. Our editorial view: an SEO certificate rarely decides a hire, and the free ones expire after a year. Take them for the structure, not the badge.
"Lifetime access". In every terms document we read it means the life of the product, and products get retired. Gotch SEO Academy's public pages disappeared this year; HubSpot's SEO certification was retired in June. Judge a course on the next twelve months.
Student counts. "20,000 students" tells you about the marketing budget, not the material.
Countdown timers. Several products on this page raise their price on a schedule. AI SEO Rainmakers says its price rises $10 for every 25 new members and never comes back down. That is a real mechanism, checkable on the pricing page, and different from a sale timer that resets when you reload.
Questions people ask before buying
Is there one best SEO course?
No. The best free course for a beginner (Ahrefs) and the best paid product for an advanced operator (AI SEO Rainmakers) are aimed at different people, and each one says so on its own site. "Best" only means something once you say best for whom.
Which SEO certification is best?
For the certificate itself, Semrush Academy. It is free, its exams are 10 to 15 questions, and it is the one most often listed on CVs. HubSpot's certificate is now an AEO Fundamentals certificate rather than an SEO one. Ahrefs' certification covers its own tool, not SEO in general. None of the paid products we rate highest issue a certificate that anyone checks.
Can I learn SEO myself?
Yes, to a working level, using the free Ahrefs, Semrush and HubSpot material plus a site of your own to practise on. What you cannot get for free is current testing data and a practitioner to ask when a tactic stops working. That is what the paid communities sell.
Is SEO difficult to learn?
The fundamentals take a few weeks. Keyword research, page structure, technical basics and link building are well documented. The difficult part is that the rules changed in 2025 and 2026 as AI answers replaced clicks for many informational queries, so material written before then teaches a game that has partly ended. Prefer courses that are dated and updated.
What are some good courses for learning SEO in 2026?
Free: Ahrefs' SEO Course for Beginners, Semrush Academy, HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals. Paid and recorded: Tech SEO Pro for technical work. Paid communities: AI SEO Rainmakers for AI search, Traffic Think Tank for a general peer group, The Blueprint Training for agency operations, AI Ranking by DataWise SEO for a budget AI-search room. The Affiliate Lab, ClickMinded's course and Authority Hacker's Authority Site System are no longer for sale.
Is AI SEO Rainmakers worth it?
For working SEOs, agency owners and affiliate operators who already understand traditional SEO, our review says yes, with the caveat that it is a monthly cost that rises over time. For complete beginners, no, and the official site says the same. Read the full Rainmakers review.
